Let me preface this review by saying that I don’t know anybody that is more loyal to local businesses than I. Never will you find me going out to eat in anything that even resembles a national chain when there are so many local entrepreneurs and business owners to support with my dollars. Our economy is seasonal so it makes it all the more important to support our business people in the off season. All of this being said, please do at least an adequate job of preparing and serving food if your chosen profession and business is a restaurant. Let me add that in a previous life I graduated from the Cornell University School of Hotel & Restaurant Administration, worked in restaurants for decades, managed full service restaurants and owned a restaurant…….I know something about which I speak. At the same time, I am certainly not a “food snob” and know enough to calibrate my expectations to each situation and establishment.
In all of my life experiences in restaurants the world over, the worst restaurant experience ever was recently in Rodes “Fresh and Fancy” on Bonita Beach Road. No exaggeration. I hate to be writing this review but, I feel a responsibility to let me people know that they have many options which are far superior in every way. One of the three menu items we ordered was the Captains Plate at $28.99…….uncooked seafood at tourist prices for what should have been the flagship menu item. Another entree was a special that night which caused food illness a few hours later. Thirdly, I ordered Linguine with White Clam Sauce which has always been one of my most favorite dishes wherever we go. Unfortunately, the pasta was actually spaghetti which if you like linguine and white clam sauce makes for an entirely different dinner. Although I was willing to work through it, when asked I did bring it to the attention of the manager whose only response and action was to say, “You’re right, of course. That is misleading isn’t it?” referring to the menu description.
Sometimes there might something redeeming when everything doesn’t go right. In this case, it was a total disaster. The server was inept and knew nothing about the menu items or the beers and wines offered. Overpriced, bad food, bad service. Non existent training and complete absence of care and attention.
Keep going west on Bonita Beach Road and try Coconut Jacks ( www.CoconutJacks.com ), Big Hickory Seafood Grille ( www.BigHickorySeafoodGrilleandMarina.com ) or Flippers ( www.FlippersOTB.com ). All good choices and all with a water view on top of it.
